A scarce original circa 1941 to 1946 period 'Irish maternity nurses large bronzed badge'; Crowned Celtic cross, the top arm with 'Maid of Erin harp', the lower with '1745' the sides with 'B' and 'M' after the founder; the title circlet inscribed 'Rotunda Hospital' 'Solamen Miseris' (Solace of the Helpless), the centre embossed with classical figure of woman and babes; the reverse impressed with maker's details 'J.S&S.D' (John Smyth & Sons Wicklow Street, Dublin. a mark used between 1941 and 1946) and in relief 'TO DO MY DUTY' with official issue number '1202'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings. Height 50mm. The Rotunda Hospital is a maternity hospital and a training centre situated in Parnell Street, Dublin, Ireland, founded as the Dublin Lying-In Hospital in 1745 by the surgeon Bartholomew Mosse. It was granted by Royal Charter on 2 December 1756 by King George II.
