A good original wartime period volunteer 'Fire Watcher' gilt lapel badge; flaming grenade inlaid with red enamel and bearing the letters 'FW', outer horseshoe title in blue. A scarce original believed to be late circa 1940's period 'London County Council (M) Nursing Service gilt badge' in the form of a red cross, blue enamel title circlet and depicting the pre 1953 'LCC Coat of arms', the reverse complete with its original buttonhole lapel fittings usually associated with a male nurse. Good condition, no chips to the enamel, very minor bruising to middle arms of the cross, gilt finish remains bright.

The 'ARP Women's Voluntary Services' for Air Raid Precautions was established in 1938 to prepare for the onset of war. By February 1939 the title was amended to 'Women's Voluntary Services for Civil Defence'
They assisted during the 1939 evacuation and eventually involved themselves in most aspects of the home front war effort.
