WW1 Royal Arsenal Woolwich Joan of Arc Hostel 1916 women workers badge

A scarce original Great War period women workers pin badge in the form of a large die-cast oxidized silver plated framed oval resting in laurel sprays, with ribbon title scroll below 'Joan of Arc Hostel 1916', the centre depicting an embossed figure of the Saint holding her sword. Very good condition, complete with original heavy duty pin fittings, minimal wear to silver plating. An excellent example.
Height 52mm.

During the First World War the 'Joan of Arc Hostel Plumstead London' was one of several hostels to accommodate the women workers from Royal Arsenal Woolwich munition factory.

A rare original Boer War commemorative souvenir in the form of a miniature size 'Defence of Mafeking' silver medallion, the obverse depicting a head and shoulder portrait of a uniformed Baden-Powell with binoculars, the reverse with well defined scene of the 'Soldiers of the Queen' with horses and guns in relief inscribed 'JUSTICE & EMPIRE' with maker's details 'S&S' (Spink & Son) in turn mounted on a unique jeweller made suspension bar, made from a single halved bullet head, secured end to end by an unmarked silver backing and central band, originally silver plated (now with rust showing through) engraved 'MAFEKING SIEGE 1899 - 1900'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings.
