A scarce original early pattern 'Gregory & Quilter Parachute Company silver plated winged parachute canopy GQ badge' depicting a parachutist, the rounded end wings inlaid with red enamelling, the reverse impressed "G.Q Parachutist". Very good condition, complete with original tube joint pin fitting and flat rolled catch, enamel with very minor stress marks to left tip.

Airborne Wandeltochte Police Sports Association Renkum souvenir medal

A good original early pattern 'Airborne Walking Tour bronze participants medal, the obverse displaying an embossed pegasus emblem and suspended from a silk maroon ribbon. Very good condition.
Diameter 27mm.

The annual Airborne Walking Tour was started in 1947 to honour those who fought for the liberation of our country in the September 1944. It is a tribute to the 1,700 and more British and Polish parachutist soldiers who died and were buried in the Battle of Arnhem at the Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek.

A rare original 'Irvin Parachute Company wartime award' in the form of a small gold caterpillar, the eyes set with red rubies, the reverse inscribed “SGT M.J.CARTER.”. Very good uncleaned condition, retaining original pin fittings.

The 'Gold Caterpillar Club Award' was initiated in the early 1920’s by 'Leslie Irvin' of the 'Irvin Parachute Company' to be awarded to anyone whose life was actually saved by the use of one of their parachutes.

RAF Sergeant M.J. Carter volunteered for aircrew duties and qualified as a Bomb Aimer In 1944 he was posted to '514 Squadron RAF' which at that time operated the Avro Lancaster MK1. On the night of the 12/13 August 1944 he was briefed with his crew for operations to Russelsheim. His pilot a New Zealander 'Flight Sergeant J Lawrie' lifted his Lancaster into the air from RAF Waterbeach at 21.44hrs. All appeared to go well until 01.30hrs when the Lancaster was attacked by a night fighter, Flight Sergeant Lawrie gave the order to Bale out, but to ensure his crew was safe he remained at the controls, which cost him his life. Carter with the rest of the crew jumped into the darkness, his life saved by his irvin parachute, thus qualifying him to become a member of the caterpillar club. All the remaining crew landed safely and evaded capture.

A rare original 'Irvin Parachute Company wartime award' in the form of a small gold caterpillar, the eyes set with red rubies, the reverse inscribed “F/O J.F. Acquier”. Very good condition, retaining original pin fittings.

The 'Gold Caterpillar Club Award' was initiated in the early 1920’s by 'Leslie Irvin' of the Irvin Parachute Company to be awarded to anyone whose life was actually saved by the use of one of their parachutes.

Flying Officer J.F. Acquier was commissioned into the RAF in 1943. He was posted to 434 (Bluenose) Squadron of the RCAF, which operated the Handley Page Halifax bomber. On the night of the 28/29th January 1944 he was briefed for operations to Berlin. His Captain Squadron Leader J.E. Hockey lifted his aircraft from the runway of RAF Station Croft at 23.49hrs. Flying at 21,000 feet over Berlin his Halifax was attached by a night fighter and he was ordered to bale out, thus securing his place in the Irvin caterpillar club. He was quickly taken 'Prisoner of War' and was held at the famous Stalag Luft 3, which only months before was the location of the Great Escape.
