A very scarce original post 1938 period 'Teakwood treen artifact made in the form of miniature barrel from reclaimed wood from ocean liner S S Leviathan, beaing a brass plaque inscribed:
MADE FROM TEAKWOOD TAKEN FROM S.S. LEVIATHAN BY THE HUGHES BOLCKOW SHIPBREAKING Co. LTD. BLYTH, NORTHUMBERLAND.
Good condition, small edge knock.
Height approx 7.5cm.
The Leviathan was built as the 'Vaterland' for Germany’s Hamburg-American Line in 1917 the American government converted her into a troopship, she was renamed Leviathan. She re-entered commercial service as the flagship of the new United States Lines, which operated her for the U.S. Shipping Board until 1929. Sold into private hands the ship ran until 1934. In 1938 she sailed to Scotland and was scrapped.
