A scarce original vintage period 'Widdicombe Fair promotional song badge' made of gilt metal and highly enamelled, depicting a farmers grey mare horse with with five country bumpkins in character costume riding on its back; the reverse impressed with maker's details 'H.W.Miller Ltd Branston St. B'Ham.18' with 'Regd 791733' a design and patent date of 1934. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no stress marks or damage to the enamel. Height approx 21mm.
'Widdicombe Fair is a well-known Devon folk song about a man called Tom Pearce, whose horse dies after someone borrows it to travel to the fair in Widecombe with his friends. The chorus ends with the names of seven men travelling to the fair: Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davy, Dan'l Whiddon, Harry Hawke, Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all.
