Thomas Smailes and Sons Steamship Co Whitby Cap Badge by J.R.Gaunt London

An extremely rare original short lived 1904 to circa 1918 period 'Thomas Smailes and Sons Steamship Company cap badge'; fine quality gilt wreath mounted to the centre with a blue enamel house flag with a distinct white style 'S'; the reverse inpressed with maker's details 'J.R.GAUNT LONDON'. Very good condition, complete with original two loop fittings, the house flag attached with screw and nut, no stress marks or damage to the enamel, an excellent example.
Height approx 44mm.
Thomas Smailes and Sons Steamship Co Whitby was registered on 2 August 1904. Lloyds Book of House Flags and Funnels (1912) shows the house flag in colour. The company disappeared at the end of the First World War.
