A scarce original wartime issue London volunteer fireman's 'Auxiliary Fire Service home front badge'; large red embroidered 'AFS WEST HAM' on navy blue cotton woven drill, this been worn on the breast of the working overall uniform, the reverse with black hessian lining. Good used condition, colours remain bright.
Height approx 101mm.
The 'Auxiliary Fire Service' AFS was first formed in 1938. In 1941 the 'Auxiliary Fire Service' and the local authority fire brigades were amalgamated to become the 'National Fire Service'.
