A scarce original First World War period 'British War Medal inscribed '17 -1445 PTE. R. SMYTH R. IR. RIF.' complete with unused original ribbon, Royal Irish Rifles cap badge, RIR shoulder title, COMRADES OF THE GREAT WAR LAPEL BADGE' numbered and bearing a crowned harp to the centre, part alloy Identification bracelet impressed 'B. SMYTH 17 1445 8 R.I. RIFLES', please note initial 'B' incorrect or possibly for Bob, also a hallmarked silver Masonic fob.
Private Robert Smyth appears to have originally volunteered for service with the 8th (East Belfast) Service Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles, whilst at Newcastle in 1915 he was transferred to the 17th Bn R.I.R, being assigned the number 17 -1445, he then volunteered for service overseas and landed in France after the 1st January 1916 earning the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Before serving with the R.I.R he had served with the Young Citizens Volunteers being issued the Ulster Volunteer Force Lapel badge numbered 'CN 1829' (See separate listing.)
