A very rare original Second World War period example for the coal mining pit 'The Hartley Main Collieries Ltd'; chromium plated Art Nouveau style design inlaid with cream enamel 'ARP' to central stage on blue enamel ground, with an additionally applied red 'FIREMAN' scroll below; the reverse impressed with maker's details 'Thomas Fattorini Ltd Regent St Birmingham'. Good condition, complete with original buttonhole fittings, slight flaws to the enamel where scroll is attached with minor bruises.
Height 26mm.

The Hartley Colliery mining pit disaster that occurred on 16 January 1862 which resulted in the deaths of 204 workers, prompted a change in British law that required all collieries to have at least two independent means of escape.
