City of London Imperial Volunteers CIV old comrades association badge

A scarce original post Boer War vintage period 'C.I.V. old comrades association OCA membership lapel badge', small gilt oval bearing blue enamel title surround, the centre with an embossed white enamel Crowned City shield from the Coat of Arms', red cross and 'Wat Tyler's dagger' in the first quarter; the reverse with very faint illegible maker's details. Very good mint condition, complete with original buttonhole lapel fitting, no damage to the enamel, gilt finish remains bright.

The 'City Imperial Volunteers' were raised by the Lord Mayor in December 1899 to fight in the Boer War in South Africa. All recruits that enlisted were granted the Freedom of the City of London and embarked for South Africa in January 1900 and were disbanded on their return. The Old Comrades Association survived into the 1950's.
