Austin Motor Co Ltd Shadow Factory Aero Engines war service identification badge E4 works department

A rare original circa 1940's wartime period Government aircraft manufacturers 'Austin Motor Co Ltd Shadow Factory Aero Engines identification lapel badge'; gilt square title surround, the centre bearing the companies logo a winged steering wheel and inlaid with dark blue enamel; the reverse impressed with maker's details 'Thomas Fattorini Ltd, Regent St Birmingham' and to the top right hand corner the engraved the works department number 'E4'. Very good condition, complete with original buttonhole lapel fitting, enamel with very minor service wear and light surface scratches.
Size 25 x 25mm.

At the beginning of the war the motor car manufacturer 'Austin Motor Company' were involved in aircraft production and built the Shadow aircraft factory to supply the RAF. It was situated in Cofton Hackett, Bromsgrove, Worcester. This particular badge was issued in different colours depending on which department you were working in.
