A rare original First World War period 'Ulster Volunteer Medical & Nursing Corps badge' gilded crowned blue enamel title circlet 'U.V.M. & N.C. For God & Ulster' the centre bearing Red Cross on white enamel ground with 'Red Hand of Ulster' shield below; the reverse impressed with maker's details 'Sharman. D. Neill Ltd Belfast' and 'Rd.No.629010' a registration, design and patent date of 1913, with plain horizontal bar and ring behind the crown to support the red silk ribbon hung from a suspension bar 'UAAC' Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, enamel perfect, ribbon with age wear

The 'Ulster Aid Ambulance Corps' was raised in London 1914 by Miss Constance Bloomfield an Ulster women. The aim of the corps would be to help the sick and wounded of Ulster in the event of an Irish civil war.
By March 1914 it consisted of four companies each complete with Surgeons, nurses and support staff. It was accepted for service with the Medical Board of the Ulster Volunteer Force under the presidency of Lady Londonderry.
