A scarce original First World War period 'National Egg Collection for the Wounded badge' gilded brass egg shaped badge, inlaid with white enamelling, worn by a 'Controller' in the organisation, the reverse impressed with maker's details 'Vaughtons Ltd' and official issue number '1222'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, enamel perfect, gilt remains bright.
Height 33mm.

The National Egg Collection was a national scheme started in the First World War to supply the scarce and much needed fresh eggs to the wounded soldiers and sailors recovering in local War Hospitals, weekly appeals continued well into 1919.
