A rare original First World War 'Princess Mary 1914 Christmas Gift Fund writing case with bullet pencil, the brass case engraved with Princess Mary's Cypher and stamped to the base “KN 14 VII”, complete with “Sterling Silver” bullet head and sharp virtually unused pencil. The canvas cover stamped with Princess Mary's Cypher, Christmas Fund 1914 and retains its brass open pattern press stud which needs handling with care. A memorial card accompanies this case and reads:
"In Loving Memory of Lc.Cpl. Lewis John Davies Beloved Son Of Thomas And Mary Davies, Pentre'rhedyn Street, Machynlleth, Who fell asleep October 26th, 1918, Aged 22 years, Interred in Machynlleth Cemetery October 31st."
With this is a portrait photograph of a nurse, a group of five nurses, a hospital ward, possibly his grave and some family snap shots. Very good condition.

Lance Corporal John Davies Lewis was a native of Machynlleth in Monmouthshire, Volunteering for service with the Welsh Horse, he landed at Gallipoli on the 19th October 1915. Surviving the Campaign he was transferred to the 25th (Montgomery & Welsh Horse Yeomanry) Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. The Battalion moved to France in early May 1918. Wounded in France he was invalided back to “Blighty” and admitted to the King George Hospital South East London on the 11th July 1918. He died as a result of his wounds at 1-45 on the 26th October and his body was returned to his home town for burial.
