A scarce original 'George VI' period 'Canadian Memorial Cross' awarded to widows and mothers of World War II servicemen; the reverse officially named "R61529 F/SGT. L.T. FULCHER” with additional pin fittings half obscuring the "Sterling" mark. Very good condition, silver now toned.

iR61529 Flight Sergeant Louis Thomas Fulcher was born on the 3rd November 1918 at Melton Constable in Norfolk, England. Emigrating to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. he volunteered for service in the RCAF in December 1940. Selected for aircrew he trained as a Flight Engineer and was posted to the UK, where he joined 467 (RAAF) Squadron operating the Avro Lancaster Bomber. He was crewed with the B Flight Commander a New Zealand Pilot Squadron Leader A.M. Paape DFC & Bar who was known to the Squadrona as “First Back” Paape. This is believed due to the efficiency of his crew he was always the first to return after an operation. On the evening of the 3rd April 1943, Fulcher and his crew was briefed for an operation to Essen. Climbing into their Lancaster T for Tommy they took off from RAF Bottesford at 19.34 hrs over Essen they were shot down and crashed within the target area, all the crew were killed and were buried on the 7th April.
