A scarce Boer War period English made, celluloid tin button souvenir badge, sold in aid of the war fund, in the form of a black and white portrait of 'Lord Kitchener'; the reverse with paper inset 'Manufactured by The Merchants Portrait Co. Kentish Town Rd. London, N.W'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fitting, minimal foxing.
Diameter 23mm.
Designed from a portrait of Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, from 'South Africa and the Transvaal War', by Louis Creswicke, published 1900.
Lord Kitchener died in 1916 near the Orkney Islands, Scotland, when the warship taking him to negotiations in Russia was sunk by a German mine.
