A scarce original silver and enamel badge from the 'The Retreat York' a hospital specialising in mental nursing; circular example bearing cross within a vivid blue title surround with Latin motto 'Cum Bona Voluntate Servientes'; the reverse impressed with Birmingham silver hallmarks for 1936 and maker's details "Thomas Fattorini Limited Birmingham". Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, edge knock at 7 o'clock resulting in small nick to the enamel otherwise perfect.

'The Retreat Hospital' opened in 1796, it was founded by the Quaker 'William Tuke' and was originally run by and for Quakers patients only, but gradually became open to everyone. There Latin motto 'Cum Bona Voluntate Servientes' meaning 'With good will doing service' is taken from the Bible.
