A rare original wartime period 'Official American War Workers' badge; very small gilt and enamel example depicting the national flag of the United States of America "Stars and Stripes" and pre 1801 Union Flag of Great Britain inlaid with red,white and blue enamelling, with ribbon scroll below in white inscribed 'Bundles For Britain'; the reverse with single screw post with impressed maker's details to the cap "American Emblem Co Utica, N.Y.". Very good condition, enamel good, minor service wear to gilt finish.

Bundles for Britain was founded by Natalie Wales Latham in 1940 as a knitting circle in a store front in New York, within sixteen months it had expanded into an organization with 975 branches and by 1941 had raised over a million dollars in cash and a further million and a half in goods. Mrs. Latham was highly recognized for this wartime effort, being invested by the Queen as an honorary Commander, Order of the British Empire, the first non-British subject to receive this honour.
