A scarce 'Gentleman in Khaki' silver plated vesta case with embossed figure to the front and match striker to the base. Good condition, hinge in perfect working order, complete with original ring suspension, some minor wear to silver plating.

The 'Absent-Minded Beggar' was a poem by 'Rudyard Kipling' written in 1899 as part of an appeal by the Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers fighting in the South African War. Richard Caton Woodville provided an illustration, titled 'A Gentleman in Kharki' showing a wounded but defiant British soldier, numbers of the poem, sheet music were published and large quantities of related merchandise were sold to aid the charity the 'Absent-Minded Beggar Fund'
