A good original circa 1941 utility regulation period 'Women's Voluntary Services for Civil Defence badge' chromium plated example bearing utility restriction red painted finish, the reverse impressed with maker's details 'L.Simpson & Co'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, minimal wear to paintwork. Height 30mm. The 'ARP Women's Voluntary Services' for Air Raid Precautions was established in 1938 to prepare for the onset of war. By February 1939 the title was amended to 'Women's Voluntary Services for Civil Defence' They assisted during the 1939 evacuation and eventually involved themselves in most aspects of the home front war effort. Utility regulation came into force circa 1941 and enamel was replaced with red painted finish.

A scarce original Second World War period Womens Voluntary Service Identification badge' in the form of chromium plated octagonal, inlaid with green enamel, bearing red enamel band across the centre 'Housewives Service'; the reverse impressed with maker's details 'Fattorini Bradford'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no damage to the enamel and retaining all of the chromium plated finish. An excellent example. Height 25mm. The W.V.S Housewives Service was originated in Barnes in the early 1940's and quickly spread throughout the London Region and later the counties. These on-call local women volunteers who had detailed knowledge of the residents of their streets, could be called upon to assist ARP Wardens with the care of the casualties after an Air Raid attack and before the arrival of the first aid services.

Good condition, colour remains bright, MOTH specks front and back. Width approx 86mm. Introduced in 1943 for non uniformed members and used as a form of identification.

An interesting piece of social history in the form of a scarce original wartime period Women's Voluntary Service felt cloth uniform badge' maroon silk embroidered Crowned 'W.V.S Civil Defence' on grey felt cloth backing, together with Sussex County stripe and four year service chevron with an extra two years added on, together with a Ministry of Supply box addressed to: 'Mr.G.A.GATES, Borough Surveyor, TOWN OFFICES, ARUNDEL.' Very good clean condition. The 1939 Household Member Sensor for '6, Queens Lane, Arundel' lists two people living at that address, Mr George A Gates born 04 Dec 1881 Borough Surveyor (Civilian Roll ARP Warden).
