A scarce original '1920's Polo enthusiasts annual membership badge'; crowned circular gilded brass example inlaid with dark red enamel, displaying white laurel sprays joined at the base by a ribbon bow; the reverse impressed in relief "Ranelagh Club 1920" and with official issue "No.1797". Excellent condition, complete with original suspension ring to attach to a fob, enamel perfect, gilt remains bright. Diameter 26mm. The Ranelagh Club was famous throughout the world for the equestrian ball game 'Polo'. Founded in 1878 it was situated at Barn Elms, Richmond upon Thames, London. The club had approximately 3000 affluent members by 1913, including many prominent military figures and members of different Royal Families. It closed shortly before the Second World War.
