A unique example issued to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice of George Herridge for his country.
PO/14195 Private George Herridge was a native of Winchester and enlisted into the Royal Marine Light Infantry on the 27th July 1905. At the outbreak of the Great War he was posted to the Battlecruiser HMS Invincible. He saw action with his ship at the Battle of Heligoland Bight August 1914 and the Battle of the Falklands, 8th December 1914. On the 31st May 1916 he stood at his Acton Station, once more as his ship then part of the 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron prepared to engage the German Fleet at Jutland. During the battle she received a hit on Q turret, which resulted in her magazine exploding and the loss of the ship and 1,026 Officers and men. Private George Herridge was amongst those lost.
